"The Isle" (1999)
Seoul Selection Bookstore
Saturday at noon
The beauty of an island makes a perfect contrast with the breathtaking and disturbing images of a sadomasochistic relationship between a man and a woman. In the fantastic world of the island, Hui-jin (Suh Jung) owns a small restaurant at a fishing spot near a reservoir of an island, and turns to prostitution in the night. One day she saves former policeman Hyong-sik (Kim Yu-seok) from committing suicide, who feels remorse over killing his estranged lover. She goes on to heal his wounded mind by having sex with him. Although the two become closer day by day, Hyong-sik decides to leave Hui-jin, being unable to overcome his own solitude and to resist Hui-jin's tenacious love toward him. This film directed by Kim Ki-duk, who won the best director prize at the Berlin Film Festival for his most recent film "Samaria". On DVD. Located near Anguk Station on subway line 3. Tickets: 3,000 won. Details: (02) 734-9565 or www.seoulselection.com.
