Local Computer Graphics Firm Wows Hollywood

"It's true. People are surprised when they're told that our graphics program was used in the animated movie 'Shrek the Third'".

The US$160 million 'Shrek the Third' was released in 4,122 theaters in the U.S. last Friday. The U.S. box-office take for the movie's first weekend hit $120 million, making it the third-best first weekend performance ever, following 'Spiderman 3' and 'Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest'.

Few people know that technology from a small Korean company was used to help make the film. But Choi Kwang-jin of computer graphics company FXGear said an official with DreamWorks -- the producer of 'Shrek' was very grateful for the company's products.

FXGear proved its technology with the Korean movie 'The Restless', which was released last year and was a hot topic for its lively computer graphics. FXGear contributed to several 'Restless' scenes, including ones in which the main character played by Jung Woo-sung flies to the sky and falls to the ground at great speed -- they helped animate the character's hair and clothing.

FXGear's products include a graphics program called 'Qualoth' that depicts the delicate textures of clothing in motion, and 'FXHair' which renders the motion of strands of hair as they pushing and bumping against each other. Hollywood computer graphic experts couldn't hide their surprise when they saw these scenes in 'Restless'. Accurately animating hair as it moves in the wind and tangled clothing was considered impossible in Hollywood. It is said that the most difficult scene to animate realistically is when two objects collide.
