Widaehan Yusan (Great Expectations) (2003)
Saturday at noon
Seoul Selection Bookstore This Romantic Comedy takes its name from the famous novel by Charles Dickens, and though both the book and film deal with a Reversal of Fortunes, there's nothing else that's similar about the two. Using unemployment as its theme _ something many people in their 20s and 30s would likely empathize with _ the film is a lighthearted and absurd story about how a string of coincidences reshapes two people's lives. Chang-sik (Lim Chang-jung) and Mi-yong (Kim Sun-ah) are down on their luck. Despite having a degree in psychology from a top university, Chang-sik hangs out at racetracks and is the black sheep of his family. Mi-yong, on the other hand, works as a video store clerk, but has no direction in her life and feels like a failure next to her more successful sister. Things change, however, when the two slackers accidentally meet and later witness a hit-and-run that was set up by a criminal gang to kill off an old man. On DVD. Located near exit 2 of Kwanghwamun Station on subway line 5. Tickets: 3,000 won. Details: (02) 734-9565 or www.seoulselection.com .
