Nonagenarian Lotte Group founder Shin Kyuk-ho was admitted to Seoul National University Hospital on Monday for a checkup of his mental faculties. The results will determine whether he needs a legal guardian.
The founder is embroiled in a messy power struggle between his two sons which began last summer.
Last December, his younger sister Shin Jung-sook asked a court to appoint a legal guardian, saying he has senile dementia.
Shin's first son Dong-joo, the chairman of SDJ Corporation, has claimed that his father named him as the legitimate successor, but the boards and management of the vast Japanese-Korean conglomerate have sided with his other son Dong-bin.
The tests will take about two weeks, and the results are expected in June.
