"Low Life" invited to Venice competition

2004/08/03 | Permalink | Source

Veteran director Im Kwon-taek's 99th film "Low Life" ("Haryu Insaeng") has been invited to screen in the competition section of the Venice International Film Festival.

This marks the first trip to Venice by director Im since 1987, when his film "The Surrogate Woman" was awarded with a Best Actress citation for Kang Soo-yeon. In recent years, Im's works "Chunhyang" and "Chihwaseon" have screened in the competition section at the Cannes International Film Festival, with "Chihwaseon" sharing the festival's Best Director award in 2002.

"Low Life", which stars Cho Seung-woo and Kim Gyu-ri, tells the story of a youth who gets involved in organized crime during the turbulent years between the late 1950s and the 1970s. It is financed and sold internationally by local major Cinema Service.

In addition, Asian omnibus horror project "Three, Monster" (also known as Three... Extremes) will screen in the festival's Midnight Screenings section devoted to genre films. The film contains a 40-mintue segment by local director Park Chan-wook ("Old Boy"), as well as contributions by Japanese director MIIKE Takashi and Hong Kong director Fruit CHAN. Local companies involved with the project are production company b.o.m. Film Productions and distributor CJ Entertainment.

The 61st edition of the Venice International Film Festival is scheduled to be held from September 1-11.
