Makhmalbaf to Head Asian Film Academy '07

The Asian Film Academy (AFA), now in its third year, will have renowned Iranian director Moshen Makhmalbaf as the dean of its 2007 program. AFA was conceived as an educational project for young Asian filmmakers to learn from established masters. It is organized by the Pusan International Film Festival in cooperation with Dong Seo University and the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA).

AFA will run September 27 to October 13 in Seoul and Busan. An announcement of selected Asian filmmakers who will participate in the program was made July 2nd. They will attend a series of workshops given by established professionals including Makhmalbaf, and collaborate on two short films to be completed during AFA and screened at the Pusan International Film Festival (PIFF).

Makhmalbaf is known for his explorations of Iranian society and human relationships in such award winning as Gabbeh (1996), Kandahar (2001) and Sex and Philosophy (2005). The director also runs his own 'Makhmalbaf Film School' in Iran, and his wife, two daughters, and son are also filmmakers of high regard. In 2003, he was the recipient of PIFF's Asian Filmmaker of the Year award.

Other mentors at this year's AFA include Thai director, Pen-Ek Ratanaruang and Japanese cinematographer Toyomichi Kurita.. Ratanaruang directed Last Life in the Universe (2003) and Invisible Waves (2005) while his latest film, Ploy (2007) was introduced at this year's Cannes. Toyomichi Kurita will be mentor in cinematography at AFA. He is currently a professor at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and a cinematographer working both in Japan and USA. His filmography includes Infinity (1996) and Cookie's Fortune(1999).
