2020/02/13 Source

A new science fiction project by Korea's leading film directors is in the making.

In August, MBC will begin a full-scale production of "SF8", a crossover between movies and dramas with DGK (Directors Guild of Korea) and WAVVE.

DGK, which was created to protect the freedom and rights of Korean filmmakers, consists of 361 filmmakers including Bong Joon-ho, Park Chan-wook, Lee Joon-ik and Lee Chang-dong. "SF8" is participated in by Kim Ui-seok, Roh Deok, Min Gyoo-dong, Ahn Gook-jin, Oh Ki-hwan, Lee Yoon-jeong-II, Jang Cheol-soo and Han Ka-ram from the union.

"SF8" is the story of human beings dreaming of a complete society through technological development against the backdrop of the near future.

Eight rising filmmakers, Min Gyoo-dong from "Herstory", "Oh Ki-hwan from "Fashion King", Roh Deok from "The Exclusive : Beat the Devil's Tattoo" and "Very Ordinary Couple", Jang Cheol-soo from "Secretly and Greatly", Ahn Gook-jin from "Alice In Earnestland", Lee Yoon-jeong-II from "Remember You - Movie", Han Ka-ram from "Our Body" and Kim Ui-seok from "After My Death" will come up with eight works with running-times of 40 minutes each.

Since "SF8" is a Korean version of the original Sci-Fi Anthology series, it will produce works of various materials, including AI, AR, VR, robots, games, fantasy, horror, data, superpowers and disasters. As it is the first crossover of films and dramas to be introduced in the broadcasting industry, great attention is being paid to it.

Director Min Gyoo-dong, who plans and participates in this project as a creator himself, said, "Sci-fi movies were the driving force behind many movie directors' dreams. Unfortunately, however, due to the relatively high budget and narrow market limitations, various works were not able to be produced. For the past two years, I have been looking for a platform for short-form movies that would expand various creative opportunities for member directors as head of the supervisory association and, finally, I was able to share my thoughts with MBC and WAVVE. Based on a science fiction novel, "SF8" is an original series of Science Fiction genres made by an eight directors and will feature various genres including horror, mystery, action, melodrama, romantic comedy and drama. Led by Soo Film, which has more than 20 filmmaking know-how examples, including the omnibus film series "Horror Stories", we will jump over difficult obstacles together".

The service is exceptional, too. "SF8", which is being made into two versions including the 'original' and the 'director's cut', will be on-air on MBC and WAVVE. The original "SF8" will be aired on MBC for sci-fi fans and the director's cut for the hardcore level fans will be aired on the OTT service platform WAVVE exclusively for a month.

In response, an official at MBC's IP Development Partnership said, "MBC is trying to showcase fresh and experimental content through fierce internal innovation. MBC has discovered the Korea Film Directors' Association, which can be said is the best creative group in Korea, and the original science fiction novel for a year. Sci-fi omnibus series "SF8" is not only meant to cross the boundaries of movies and dramas, but also to diversify services across broadcasting and OTT platforms".
