Media Union to Go on Strike Against New Media Laws

The National Union of Media Workers say it will begin an indefinite general strike on Friday against the seven controversial media laws sought by the ruling Grand National Party.

The union leadership said unionized workers will launch the strike on Friday morning and hold a protest rally in the afternoon on Yeouido in western Seoul.

In a news conference Wednesday, the union urged the GNP to stop trying to pass what they called "vicious laws" that would allow newspapers to own broadcasting companies.

The union argued that if passed, the laws would allow large corporations and big conservative newspapers to control the media.
