Megabox Opens 1st Branch in China

The domestic multiplex theater chain Megabox opened its first Chinese branch in Beijing Wednesday.

The theater, located inside a shopping mall in Zhongguancun Plaza, has eight screens with 1,700 seats, making it comparable to China's top five-star theaters.

Built jointly by Korea and China, it will use 'Megabox' and its Chinese name (美嘉歡樂) concurrently. The Zhongguancun Plaza area is one of Beijing's three major business districts, and the significant numbers of young people passing through the area spell bright prospects for the new theater.

Megabox says it will secure three branches by 2008, including one in Sanlitun, for a total 25 screens with 5,400 seats, after which it will advance into the Chinese market in earnest.
