German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been belatedly given the Seoul Peace Prize in recognition of her leading role in the integration of Europe.

Accepting the award in Berlin on Wednesday, Merkel said North Korea was "threatening neighboring countries" by conducting nuclear and missile tests and warned that the international community must be wary of threats to international peace.

Merkel also received US$200,000.

The delivery of the award came more than two years after she was named as the 12th winner of the prize in 2014.

The belated awards ceremony was arranged at the request of the German chancellor's office because Merkel's hopes to visit Seoul have so far been thwarted and the scandal engulfing President Park Geun-hye makes an imminent trip unlikely.
