Middle-Aged Men Getting Comfortable with Shopping Online

A growing number of men in their 40s and 50s are using smartphones to shop. Online commerce company Coupang said Thursday that the number of its male customers increased 64 percent in the first half of this year from the same period of 2014.

By age group, the increase was sharpest among customers in their 40s and 50s. Those in their 50s surged 127 percent, while there was a 75 percent jump among 40-somethings. This compares to 65 percent for teens, 52 percent for those in their 20s and 54 percent among 30-somethings.

Although customers in their 40s and 50s are still outnumbered by their juniors, they have greater purchasing power and their numbers are rising more rapidly.

"Men in their 40s and 50s are growing more adept at using smartphones, and the mobile shopping process has become simpler", Coupang said.

The most popular products among male customers were home appliances and digital goods.

By age group, teens and those in their 20s were more interested in items related to their personal appearance such as clothing and cosmetics, while customers in their 30s to 50s showed a preference for items that are a bit more practical, such as food, sporting goods and car accessories.
