2019/06/09 Source

The majority of Korean youngsters wish to study abroad, but their Japanese counterparts want to stay in their own country, a study suggests.

The Japanese government surveyed people in their teens and 20s in seven developed countries and found that Korea has the highest proportion who want to study abroad, while Japan has the lowest.

According to the Nihon Keizai Shimbun on Monday, Japan's Cabinet Office surveyed 1,000 people between 13 to 29 in France, Germany, Sweden, the U.K., and the U.S. as well as Japan and Korea late last year and found that 65.7 percent of respondents in Korea would like to study abroad.

The U.S. came a surprising second at 65.4 percent, followed by France, the U.K., Germany and Sweden. But only 32.3 percent of young Japanese wished to study abroad.

In fact, 53.2 percent of Japanese said they definitely do not want to study abroad, compared to only 22 percent of Koreans. Only 19.4 percent of Japanese said they want to live abroad for more than a year.
