Mother Scoops Best Film at Asian Film Awards

Bong Joon-ho's "Mother - 2009" has won the Best Film Award at the 2010 Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong. The Best Film Award is the icing on the cake for Korea which won a total of six awards on the night. "Mother - 2009" won two more awards including Best Writer shared by the director and Park Eun-kyo as well as the Best Actress that went to veteran Kim Hye-ja. Korean/Malaysian/HK coproduction "At the End of Day Break" yielded two awards, a Best Newcomer award for Ng Meng Hui and a Best Supporting Actor that went to Wai Ying-hung. Korea's LEE Jeon-hyun also picked up the Best Visual Effects Award for Park Chan-wook's critically acclaimed vampire thriller "Thirst".

In Korea the film won the Best Film and Best Supporting Actor awards at the Blue Dragon Awards and more recently picked up the Korean Press's Film of the Year Award. In the U.S. the film picked up the Best East Meets West Cinema Award at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Actor Kim Hye-ja has also previously won her share of Best Actress awards at international festivals including the China Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Film Festival, the Asia Pacific Screen Awards in Australia, and at the Busan Film Critics Awards.
The first Asian Film Awards were held in March 2007 where director BONG's The Host also picked up the Best Film Award.
