NAFF 2011 Announces 23 Projects

The 4th Network of Asian Fantastic Films (NAFF), to be held at Koryo Hotel from July 17 to 20, 2011, announced today its It Project selection. Consisting of 18 outstanding film projects from 8 territories, including China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, South Korea, Thailand and USA, these official selections were chosen from a competitive field of 78 entries from 19 countries.

Also announced are official selections for Project Spotlight: Japan, featuring 5 of the most challenging and creative genre film projects from Japan in recent times.

These 23 project selections reflect the depth of creativity coming from young, global genre filmmakers, who are aspiring to reach wider audiences while developing the art and industry of genre film.

Each year, NAFF acts as the meeting ground between filmmakers and the financiers, distributors, and buyers in the international film industry by nurturing long-lasting relationships and networks through It Project and Project Spotlight. The participants will be arranged numerous thirty-minute one-on-one meetings with interested potential partners. Over 200 meetings in two days and half will be scheduled based on the needs of the projects and the individual requests of the participants. Selected projects will receive cash awards and post-production supports from NAFF's official sponsors.

This year, It Project continues to attract projects from world-class talents. Joko ANWAR from Indonesia, 2009 Best of Puchon winner, is presenting his new project Modus Anomali, while Hong Kong's Daniel CHAN, whose recent work Smile for Me (2010) won NAFF Award at the 3rd NAFF, is presenting Dark Horse. Other noteworthy filmmakers include WOO Ming Jin, with last year's Cannes entry The Tiger Factory, bringing his latest project The Forgiven, and Hong Kong's WONG Ching Po, whose first work Jiang Hu won the Best New Director at the 24th Hong Kong International Film Festival.

Korean projects are to evoke the investors

This year's It Project witnessed increased number of entries by Korean filmmakers, possessing quality concepts and detailed production plans when compared to previous years. Kim Seong-ho, whose debut film "Into The Mirror" (2003) was remade into a Hollywood blockbuster, is bringing his latest project. Other known filmmakers bringing their projects include Moon Seung-wook, whose stunning "Butterfly" (2001) won Young Critic's Award at the 4th Locarno International Film Festival, and Lim Tae-hyeong, whose recent work "Encounter - 2010" was screened at the 14th PiFan and Osaka Asian Film Festival 2011.

Japanese project are re-inventing the film genre through Project Spotlight: Japan

Five film projects from Japan were chosen to represent Project Spotlight: Japan, highlighting country's prolific genre film industry, creative notions from its young filmmakers and active co-production work taking place today.

Tenashi Musume by Koji FUKADA, whose Hospitalite will screen at 15th PiFan; Braindeadgirls by Ryutaro KAJINO, whose Seafood Girl Maiko will screen at 15th PiFan; and Numachi no aru mori wo nukete, directed by Mai TOMINAGA; display a wide variety of genre projects possessing unique sensibility from each individual filmmakers. Japan's active co-production is presented through Exquisite Corpse Tokyo Horror Film from Yukie KITO, a prolific producer from Japan, and David KAPLAN, a NY-based filmmaker with award-winning films Year of the Fish, Today's Special and Play. Finally, Young Gun in the Time, another co-production project, pairs Korean director Young-doo OH with Japanese producer Nonoka IWASAKI, with the funding coming from Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival.

After enjoying the countless projects that were submitted this year from all over the world, NAFF hopes all of It Project and Project Spotlight submissions to be realized on the big screen in near future.
