New animation multiplex in Cheongju

Plans for the construction of an "animation multiplex" in Cheongju for animations and short independent films are already underway, and it is expected to be finished in June of next year. The structure?which will form part of the Cheongju Advanced Cultural Industry Complex, a project of Cheongju Cultural Industry Promotion Foundation (CEO: Nam, Sang-Woo), which is expected to be completed in January next year?will stand on a 146-pyeong area inside the Edutainment Experience Pavilion on the first floor, and will have a seating capacity of 140.

The multiplex will be the second theater in Korea (the first is Seoul Ani-Cinema) that specializes in animation. It will be equipped with technology that can play 35-mm, HD, DVD, and 6-mm films, as well as with a 3D virtual multimedia device and audio facilities (5.1 channel or more), silver screens, a lighting system, and an editing room.

Apart from the establishment of the animation multiplex, Cheongju Cultural Industry Promotion Foundation will also offer various animation programs to the people of Cheongju. Plans are underway for it to hold the "Animation Impact Festival" next year, along with Seoul, Kwangju, Daegu, and Jeju. This festival will feature short and full-length Korean and foreign animations that are not accessible to the public. The foundation will also launch various other programs, such as the screening of short animations and interviews of animation filmmakers.

"Most Koreans are familiar only with the animations of Disney or those made by the Japanese", said an official of Cheongju Cultural Industry Promotion Foundation. "We hope that the animation multiplex we are currently building will help expose the people of Cheongju to other animation works by allowing the screening of animations from the different regions of the world, including those from Europe and those made using alternative methods".

The Cheongju Advanced Cultural Industry Complex, for its part, which will house the animation multiplex, is to be a three-story structure, each story having a width of 3000 pyeong. The second and third floors will be offered for lease to companies that create animations, and the first "criant" (from "creation" and "ginat") floor will house cultural-contents facilities, such as an exhibition-cum-convention hall (the Edutainment Experience Pavilion), a character exhibition center, and a cartoon library. The foundation intended the facility to become "a business park where all kinds of cultural contents can be found, and where the planning, production, and marketing of these cultural contents can be done in one place".

"The 'criant' on the first floor of the complex will be Korea's first exhibition-experience pavilion, which will showcase all sorts of cultural contents, including cartoons, animations, characters, and edutainment", said Yu, Won-Jong, Vice Director of Cheongju Cultural Industry Promotion Foundation's Industry Team. "While Cheongju has a population of only 620,000, the potential demand for the facility is huge. We therefore expect that many citizens will use it".
