The previous opening record for a Marvel Studios' superhero film was "Captain America: Civil War" with 727,949 viewers in 2016. In 2015 "Avengers: Age of Ultron", which became the first film in the franchise to pass the 10-million mark, drew 622,165 viewers on its first day.

Notably, moviegoers flocked to an IMAX theater in Yongsan, Seoul to see the film, because the recently renovated theater has the largest IMAX screen in Korea.

Advance tickets for seats for "Avengers: Infinity War" sold out more than a week before its release. A number of scalpers, looking to cash in on the popularity of the film, are selling tickets online at exorbitant prices.

The most sought-after seats with the best views of the screen are being resold for about W110,000, or more than five times the original price of W21,000 (US$1=W1,080).

The theater chain said it would crack down on scalpers, but tickets can still be found online for between W40,000 and W70,000.
