New drama Hwangjin-i demonstrates impact of 'Cultural Archetype Syndrome'

Making full use of the 'Kisaeng culture in the Joseon period', 'traditional accessories', and the 'drinking culture'

KBS's new Wednesday and Thursday drama, "Hwangjin-i" (written by Yoon Seon-joo and directed by Kim Cheol-gyoo), hosted by Ha Ji-Won, which is scheduled to be broadcast starting Oct. 11, will use the outcome of the 'Cultural Archetype Digital Contents Program' (hereinafter referred to as 'Cultural Archetype Contents'), which is being implemented by the Korea Culture and Content Agency (KOCCA, CEO: Suh-Byung-Moon).

Hwangjin sheds light on Hwangjin, a famous kisaeng (a barmaid in the Joseon period), as a woman. The drama is already attracting many people's attention due to Ha's splendid costumes and accessories.

Olive Nine, the drama's production company, announced that it is using for its references cultural archetype contents such as Digital Content Development of the Kisaeng Culture in the Joseon Period (Korea National Open University), Korean Traditional Accessories (Graduate School of Design, Sookmyung Women's University), and Developing Korean Drinking Culture as Digital Content (Digital Evolution). These contents have already been verified by various academic specialists for their quality as research materials and their ease and efficiency of use.

"There are many verified data in cultural archetype contents that cannot be accessed otherwise", said Olive Nine. "Not only appropriate to be used as historical references by any drama production, these contents contribute to the creation of new dramas by using them to bring out new ideas and materials".

KOCCA is implementing the Cultural Archetype Digital Content Project to expand the creative foundation of cultural content production by materializing traditional Korean cultural contents by theme. The results of the project are offered via the distribution center at Cultural Content.Com ( http://www.culturalcontent.com ).

These cultural archetype contents have been used in the drama Joomong, the film The King and the Clown, and many other various genres, and are also to be showcased in the Special Exhibition Hall at the 2006 Korean Brand Exhibition, co-hosted by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy in Gyeonggi-do and Jeollabuk-do from September 28 to October 1 this year.
