Next years holiday to have most holidays in 13 years

Next year will have the most holidays in 13 years with 67 days with the holiday substitute system put in place, which makes the next day of a legal holiday that happens to be Sunday a holiday.

According to the Security and Public Administration and Statistics Korea, next year will have 67 days of holidays, most number of holidays since 67 days in 2001. This is because the eve of next years Chuseok holiday from September 7 through 9 happens to be Sunday making the next day of the holiday period a holiday.

The government and the ruling Saenuri Party agreed to implement the alternative holiday system for the Lunar New Year Day, Chuseok and Childrens Day. Under the new system, if one day during the Lunar New Year Day or Chuseok holidays happens to be Sunday, the holiday period will be extended one more day while Saturday as well as Sunday will be applied to Childrens Day.

According to the regulations on legal holidays for government offices, legal holidays include New Year`s Day, Lunar New Year Day, Buddhas Birthday, Childrens Day, Memorial Day, Chuseok, Christmas and national holidays. Among national holidays, the March First Independence Movement Day, National Liberation Day, National Foundation Day and Hangeul Proclamation Day are holidays while Constitution Day is a working day.
