Novelist Hwang - 'World Is in War of Cultural Content'

"The world is engaged in three wars, over resource and energy, food and cultural content", says novelist Hwang Seok-young (66). In a lecture in Gyeonggi Province Wednesday, the famed writer said cultural content is naively perceived as games or animation but he called it "imagination"'.
He said, "Hallyu has centered on Korean pop culture and therefore has both positive and negative aspects. For instance, Southeast Asia typically takes in American culture indirectly through Korea, which experienced U.S. culture first".
He said, "Unlike Japan, where comics and popular novels are the norm, and China, where quality literature is still difficult to foster, Korea sees a continuation of quality writings thanks to sensible readers, who buy as many as 500,000 copies of a prominent book. But to promote Korean literature to the world, he called attention to the issue of translation and urged that more quality translators be raised.
On national defense, he cited the dilemma of one country shoring up its defense, saying it would only enable the same by other countries, and called for an approach of coexistence.
Some 300 attended the lecture, including Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Moon-soo. After the lecture, Hwang held an autograph session for 30 minutes.
