[Orion's Daily Ramblings] Healing Human Connections in First Teaser for "The Goodbye Has Left"

The mother-in-law is perhaps one of the most dreaded, most mistreated women's figures in Korean drama, but it is also a family relation ripe with complexity. "The Goodbye Has Left" promises to be a work taking a closer, more human look at motherhood and these fragile bonds, and its first teaser is very promising.

I'm all for more women's stories in dramas, and the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law connection is one in dire need of better representation. In "The Goodbye Has Left", Chae Shi-ra plays Seo Yeong-hee, a woman who gave up a lot to be a mother, and who returns to the world she has cut off due to her experience of the pain it causes. Jo Bo-ah plays Jeong Hyo, a bright and warm college student whose life becomes overwhelming due to a sudden pregnancy. She is the girlfriend of Yeong-hee's son.

I've been keeping an eye on the drama since a Twitter buddy and HanCinema reader originally pointed out to me, but the teaser is what really got me invested. It's graceful, beautiful and poignant. It shows a lonely, anxious older woman being drawn out into the light by someone who is just beginning to experience life. It's the simplest, shortest concept video, but it paints its characters and their positions so clearly.

The production has commented that "The Goodbye Has Left" is a drama about overcoming one's wounds, focusing on the stories of mothers in 2018. "It's not a grand story, but a story about living in the present. We wanted to create a sympathetic drama that affirms our daily lives", they added. It's definitely a series I wish the best to, and one I'll be keeping an eye on.

"The Goodbye Has Left" will be written by So Jae-won, directed by Kim Min-sik and No Young-sub, and it will be premiering on May 26th, on MBC.
