PIFF Jury Hopes to Find Daring Films This Year

The five-member jury of the Pusan International Film Festival gave a press conference Friday to discuss what they will be looking for this year.
According to organizers 13 films from eight countries will compete for two 30,US-dollar prizes in the festival's only competition section, New Currents aimed at discovering up-and-coming Asian directors.
Emmy winning Japanese costume designer, Wada Emi, who is leading the jury this year said when it comes to awards, the jury will be considering how challenging and daring the films were.

[Interview : Wada Emi, New Currents Jury] "In discovering new talent, we will consider how the films are making new challenges in the long history of cinema because the new challenges they make today will influence filmmakers of the next generation".

The jurors agreed that although inroads have been made… it is still difficult for Asian movies to gain access to Western markets.
Drawing from her experience in the US Korean actress Kim Yunjin echoed similar sentiments saying she was surprised to find that Americans have little knowledge of Asian films but she is hopeful that PIFF will help turn things around.
A young director from Brazil whose work "Bollywood Dream" will be screened at PIFF says thanks to festivals like PIFF many films from Asia are coming into Brazil and Korean movies in particular are being very well-received.

[Interview : Beatriz Seigner, Brazillian director] "In Brazil, it arrives some Asian films, but not as many as American or European films. So it is arriving more films from all over Asia, India a little bit less. But Korean films are very well received there".

As for movies gaining attention at this year's festival…
Directed by Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami, "Certified Copy", is a film that follows the journey of a man and a woman who decide to go sightseeing in Tuscany on a whim played by French actress Juliette Binoche and British opera singer William Shimell.
Next is "Raavan" an ambitious production by Mani Ratnam, combining splendid imagery, strong music, and passionate dance to tell the story of love, hate and betrayal.

"And at this year's PIFF there will also be a special focus on Kurdish cinema and spotlights on the film industries of Spain and the Czech Republic.
Jang Ji-yun, Arirang News, Busan".
