Police Must Stop Jang Ja-yeon Rumors from Running Wild

All kinds of rumors are circulating following the disclosure of a portion of a document said to have been written by actress Jang Ja-yeon before she committed suicide. The document mentions abuse Jang suffered as a "powerless actress", such as being forced by her management agency to have sex with influential figures and suffering violence at their hands should she resist. It's like a distillation of all of the scandals in the entertainment industry which have so far only been the stuff of rumors. Moreover, the document is said to contain a list of the names of influential figures Jang had to "entertain".

Police are investigating the circumstances involving Jang's suicide and the documents she left behind, and said Tuesday that the names of influential figures had been erased in the papers handed over to authorities by KBS, which broadcast a report on the contents. Yet the actual names of scores of influential figures are being openly circulated on Internet portals and other channels. Other lists are also being circulated through private chat rooms via online messenger services. Unconfirmed lists of names are being distributed rapidly through channels that are impossible to control. It seems that the whole of society is completely defenseless against a maelstrom of rumor.

The only thing that can stem the relentless waves is for police to quickly conclude a thorough investigation of the case. Police must get to the bottom of the circumstances surrounding the creation of the documents, as well as how they were made and circulated.

The documents are said to have been written up by Jang and her manager, known only by his surname Yoo, who split off from the actress's former entertainment agency to start his own. Yoo is said to have kept the documents in his possession. Police need to verify this piece of information first. The head of the entertainment agency, identified as Kim, has sued Yoo for taking with him a number of well-known actors when he left the agency. Some say there is a chance that the documents may have been created by Yoo to attack Kim.

Jang's family said in a media interview that the actress was a victim of the legal dispute between Yoo and Kim. Jang's family said they felt the actress had been used by Yoo. There are said to be several documents, including one Yoo gave to Jang's family, who burned it. Another is the one that was leaked to KBS, and Yoo had yet another. Their content and format are said to be different.

Police need to uncover the long-hidden abuses in the entertainment industry and root them out. To do that, they must clarify the veracity of the documents, which influential figures were involved and exactly what happened. Because Jang is dead, the longer the police take to probe the case, the greater the chances that various people might use the documents as tools for slander and other schemes by adding or removing the names of particular figures. The investigation cannot be that difficult to conduct. Police need to summon Yoo and Kim as soon as possible. What's most important is that no time is wasted.
