Pres. Lee Calls for Increase in Budget for "Culture Voucher" System

In his biweekly radio address Monday morning the Korean president has announced that his government will look into expanding and reinforcing its "culture voucher" system which enables low-income citizens to enjoy more cultural activities.
Citing that less than 8.5 million US dollars was provided for culture vouchers this year President Lee Myung-bak pledged to increase the budget starting next year so more of the underprivileged can benefit by going to the movies, concerts and other exhibitions.
President Lee stressed that South Korea a country whose per capita income is 20-thousand US dollars… needs to become a "culture powerhouse" to match its growing economic standard.
He vowed to bolster the budget and expand cultural benefits to those whose incomes are less than 120 percent of the minimum cost of living which currently is set at just over 1,100 dollars per month for a four-member household.
Under the present system introduced early this year in order to expand social welfare 250-thousand people categorized as extremely poor… were provided with about 40 dollars worth of culture vouchers.
