Korea University professor Lee Byung-hun was named by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as the new head of the Korean Film Archive, Tuesday.

He will serve as the chairman of the institute for three years until Sept. 24, 2012. Lee, 63, is an adjunct professor at the Korea University Department of Journalism.

He was also an editor of the photography department and deputy managing editor at the Chosun Ilbo, and a professor at Sogang University.

The ministry expects Lee's experience in various fields to be invaluable in contributing to the acquisition and preservation of Korean films.

The institute collects movie films and non-film materials, classifies them and incorporates them into a comprehensive database. It also preserves and restores old Korean films.
