In the first four months of this year, 352,507 foreign tourists have been to Jeju, up 103.4 percent compared to the same period last year. Chinese tourists accounted for 199,920, a 179.2 percent increase.

The previous record was August 2011 when 142,170 foreigners went to the island. The peak travel season is between July and October. Last year, 122,041 foreigners visited Jeju in July, 142,170 in August, 127,168 in September, and 128,903 in October.

But that a new record has been set in April shows that there are other attractive times of the year. The figures boost hopes among Jeju tourism officials of reaching their goal of attracting 1.5 million tourists this year.

Jeju officials believe the rising popularity stems from increased publicity the island gained from being chosen as a natural heritage site by UNESCO and other international accolades. Another factor is the opening of 22 direct flights from 19 cities overseas, including Hebei and Naning cities in China's Anhui Province.
