S. Korea ranks 47 out of 158 nations in global happiness index

Korea is the 47th happiest country in the world, according to the 2015 World Happiness Report.

In the report, which quantified happiness released by the United Nations on Thursday, Korea came 47th with 5.984 points in the scale of 10 among 158 nations around the world. Its happiness ranking has fallen by 6 places from the 41st in the 2013 survey. Among Asian countries, Korea was the 5th happiest country after Singapore (24th), Thailand (34th), Taiwan (38th) and Japan (46th). The average happiness of Korean people between 2012 and 2014 went up by 0.444 point from the average between 2005 and 2007.

The survey calculated the happiness index per nation based on GDP, life expectancy, social welfare awareness and freedom of choice polled by Gallop, and global public opinion data on corruption, etc.

The top five happiest countries included four European countries. Swiss (7.587 points) topped the list and Iceland ranked second. Denmark, which was the happiest country in the world in the 2013 report, came third followed by Norway (4th) and Canada (5th).
