S.Korea Seeks Registry of Two Records on Memory of the World Register

The Cultural Heritage Administration will seek the registry of two Korean written records on the UNESCO Memory of the World International Register March, next year.

The administration says its cultural property committee finalized the application of the two records out of five candidates for the UNESCO Memory of the World program.

One of the records is the War Diary of Admiral Yi Sun-shin that was written during the seven-year Imjin War with Japan. It's unprecedented worldwide for an admiral to leave a personal record of war written during wartime.

The other item is historical records on the Saemaeul or New Community Movement, which was a rural development initiative launched in the 70s by late former President Park Chung-hee. The Saemaeul Movement was recognized by the U.N. as an exemplary case of poverty eradication, and underdeveloped nations, including those in Africa, are learning from the Korean example.
