SBS Arttech inks a deal to build TV studio in Vietnam

SBS Arttech, an affiliate of the Seoul Broadcasting System, a major broadcaster, yesterday revealed that it won a $17 million contract to build a television production complex in Vietnam.

The subsidiary of SBS will create Vietnam's largest TV film studio; its goal will be producing quality films and programs for both domestic and foreign stations, according to a statement released yesterday.

The facility will be owned and operated by the Tri Viet Media Corporation, one of the terrestrial channels in Vietnam.

Lee Woong-mo, president of SBS Arttech, signed the contract with Le Thi Phuong Thuy, chairperson of Tri Viet Media, on Saturday, the statement indicated. SBS Arttech is an arts and graphic image production outfit.

Under the agreement, SBS Arttech will build two separate television studios, which will cover a total of 10 hectares, in Binh Duong province's Industrial Services Complex near Ho Chi Minh, as well as a training institute in Hanoi.

"The new training institute will educate local TV engineers, writers and programmers. And SBS Arttech will provide educational content to the institute over the next ten years", said an official with the firm.

The contract also includes providing training opportunities in Korea for Vietnamese experts, he added.

The production complex, "Dream Field Studio", will house four studios, training areas and other facilities. Designed by Sinn Architects of Korea, the buildings will feature Vietnamese themes such as fishing boats and lotus flowers.

SBS Arttech will break ground early next year. It will build the TV production complex and then the training institute.

The company expects to complete the two projects by 2009.

Even after finishing with construction, SBS Arttech said it will monitor the operations of the TV studios, in an effort to improve the quality of local TV programming.

The two companies have been discussing the project since they signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the creation of such a complex in 2005.
