The event has drawn some 2.5 million local and foreign visitors every year since its launch in 2009.

This year's festival features lanterns -- both traditional handmade paper items and the LED variety -- designed to resemble historic sites around the Han River.

A 30m-high, 3m-wide artwork depicting popular riverside attractions including 27 bridges and the National Assembly building will be on display, as will unique Chinese and Filipino lanterns.

A fun outing is in store for families with children, as characters from animated films such as "Larva", "Pororo the Little Penguin", and "Robot Taekwon V" will appear in lantern form.

Visitors can also float wish lanterns on the stream.
