The Seoul Metropolitan Government on Monday said it will spend W102.7 billion over the next three years to build a citywide free Wi-Fi network.

Currently, about 31 percent of the metropolitan area, including the city hall, public agencies, major parks, plazas and marketplaces, provide free Wi-Fi.

"The aim is to make sure that every citizen benefits from internet access in the digital age", a city official said. "Foreign visitors will also be able to use free Wi-Fi services as they please".

The metropolitan government plans to build its own Wi-Fi network instead of using private mobile networks. It believes this will cost a lot initially but pass the break-even point in five years considering the high fees of private telecoms.
