Seoul Film Festival Aims to Broaden Cinematic Horizons

A movie festival currently taking place in Seoul seeks to shed light on some creative films from home and abroad that are not very well-known in Korea.
The Seoul Film Festival now in its seventh year hopes to stimulate filmgoers to Break Out of their cinematic shell.
Organizers says the movies on offer are sure to broaden viewers' horizons.
During the 10-day run audiences will also explore the deep bond between films and musicals.
Several movie remakes including the popular 2005 musicals "Rent" and "The Producers" are showcased at the festival.
"Domestic moviegoers have the opportunity to see a wide range of movies from more than 30 countries. The aim of the festival is to encourage more interest in arthouse films. One of the highlights is the opening film "Climates" from Turkey".
"Climates" centers around a couple's true feelings in the context of the world's climates and atmospheres.
Filmmakers from the world over a number of domestic celebrities and pop artist Nancy Lang were present at the opening ceremony held last Friday.
The festival may not be large in scale but it has an ambitious purpose: to offer Korean audiences a window on non-mainstream movies.
Organizers say there's even more.
"The festival proves that a theater is not the only place where you can watch films. It encourages filmgoers to see a wide range of movies through the Internet, via Digital Multimedia Broadcasting on cellular phones and via video transmitters at art galleries".
Festival organizers are clear about their mission.
"We are interested in cinema itself, rather than a certain genre or market trends. From its early stages, the festival has introduced a number of moving image formats from traditional films, Web art and music videos".
Six Korean films will be screened in this year's newly added competition section by debut directors.
Among the films are the award-winning "The Unforgiven" by director Yoon Jong-bin which portrays the impact of military service on Korea's young men.
