The morning temperature plummeted to -1.3 degrees Celsius in Seoul on Thursday, the Korea Meteorological Administration said.

The lowest temperature in the country was recorded at -12.5 degrees in Yangyang, Gangwon Province, and temperatures in most other regions were also unseasonally chilly, with -6.4 degrees in Daegwallyeong, Gangwon, -0.9 degrees in Daejeon, 3 degrees in Gwangju, and 6.6 degrees in Busan.

Temperatures plummeted as a cold continental anticyclone met a stream of cold air in the upper atmosphere over the Korean Peninsula.

On Friday, morning lows were up to five degrees lower than the seasonal average, with -4 in Seoul, -3 in Daejeon, 0 degrees in Gwangju, and 2 in Busan, and the windchill factor made it feel even colder.
