Seoul Skyscraper Series: Jongno Tower

From my office, I can see the outline of this uniquely-shaped building and have always been intrigued to learn more about it.

I've directed a friend to my office by saying it's near the "building with the cut-out at the top". Turns out, it's called the Jongno Tower and is indeed one of the most recognizable buildings in Seoul because of its design.

Built in 1996, the building is owned by Samsung Securities, which is stamped across the front of the building, and is a 33-floor office building with a shopping area in the basement called Millennium Plaza and an upscale bar and restaurant on the top floor called Top Cloud. (If you don't have to pay for it, I highly recommend the buffet – it's divine.) The restaurant offers live performances, and as you can imagine, stunning views of the city. Even the bathroom at Top Cloud has a terrific view!

Closer up, the details of the building are also interesting. It sides look as if they are made up of giant metal snowflakes.

I think Jongno Tower is a great example of how Korea's skyscrapers mix the old with the new, the natural with the man-made. The tower overlooks the Cheonggyecheon Stream and nearby are Korea's royal palaces and traditional architecture.

To get there, take line 1 to Jonggak Station and leave through exit 3. The subway station is connected directly to the Jongno Tower and Millennium Plaza.
