Seoul Suffers 18 Tropical Nights in a Row

The intense heat wave that has gripped Korea this summer is expected to last at least another 10 days.

The Korea Meteorological Administration said Wednesday that daytime highs of more than 33 degrees Celsius are expected to continue until Aug. 18.

Temperatures soared to 35 degrees across the country on Wednesday and reached 38 degrees in some parts of North Gyeongsang Province.

Tropical nights when the mercury refuses to fall below 25 degrees are also lasting longer. The evening and early morning temperatures in Daejeon, and Seoul remained above 27 degrees on Tuesday and Wednesday night.

As of Wednesday, Seoul had suffered 18 tropical nights in a row, Daejeon and Gwangju 19 and Yeosu, South Jeolla Province 21, fast approaching the all-time record of 24 in Seoul and Incheon in 2016.

Most parts excluding South Chungcheong and Jeolla provinces, saw showers on Thursday morning and will see more rains between 10 to 60 mm on Thursday night.

Ban Ki-sung at meteorological information provider Kweather said, "Brief showers brought some respite, but we'll have to wait until late this month for temperatures to fall below 30 degrees".
