Singer Charged with Shirking Military Duties

Singer Kim Woo-joo was indicted by the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on Tuesday on charges of trying to shirk his military duties by feigning mental illness.

According to prosecutors, Kim (30) went to the psychiatric department of Seoul National Hospital a total of 42 times from March 2012 until May last year.

He told doctors he had started seeing ghosts eight years ago and anxiety nearly prevented him from leaving the house.

Kim was hospitalized for 15 days in July and diagnosed with mental problems. In October he was reclassified from fit for active duty to suitable only for social services by the Military Manpower Administration. But a later probe prompted by an anonymous tipoff revealed that there was nothing wrong with him.
