He is the first Asian popera singer to hold such an honor, his management agency DGNcom said on Wednesday.

Lim submitted an application for a membership to the U.S. Recording Academy, which oversees the award event for the English-language music industry, last month, and it was recently accepted on a five-year term.

"I am very honored and hope to help promote Korean arts and culture around the world", Lim said.

Lim will be enlisted to serve his mandatory military service next Monday.
