SK, LG to Launch Commercial IPTV

The era of full-fledged IPTV service has arrived in Korea, as two operators will launch commercial services starting January first.

SK Broadband signed agreements with terrestrial broadcasters KBS and MBC this month to re-air their programs in real time starting Thursday. It also reached a similar agreement with SBS.

It will officially launch commercial services of IPTV, or Internet Protocol TV, by offering 23 channels.

LG Dacom's IPTV service, myLGtv, will also go commercial the same day.

Industry leader KT will also expand its service, as it secured in November the right to re-air programs produced by SBS.

The government has plans to support new IPTV programs that aim to narrow the educational gap between the haves and have-nots by offering quality educational content at the click of a mouse.
