Female activists demanded lawmakers appoint a special prosecutor to resume a thorough investigation into the death of actress Jang Ja-yeon who committed suicide after leaving a note with allegations that she was forced to provide sexual services to influential showbiz and media executives.

Four presidents of pro-woman civic groups including the Korean Women's Association United said it filed a petition with the National Assembly. The petition includes more than 5,400 women' signatures, they said.

"Despite a month-long investigation, police failed to unveil the truth", they said in a statement. "They were hesitant to summon key suspects for questioning. The introduction of a special prosecutor is necessary".

Following her death in March, police formed a special squad and vowed a thorough investigation of those on what they call Jang Ja-yeon list. But they failed to deliver on the promise, leaving corporate and media executives unquestioned.
