Sin Gak who led the Joseon army in its first victory since the Japanese invasion, was killed.

Sin Gak dismissed before the Japanese invasion but was brought back when war started. When Seon Jo made the royal refuge, Sin Gak was one of the generals who protected the Han River line of defense and was appointed under Lee Yang-won. Later, he became a vice marshal under Do Won-soo and Kim Myeong-won.

There were only 4,000 soldiers at the Han River defense line so they scattered when the Japanese came in. Sin Gak was the same. He stayed afar and watched what happened. He joined forces with the Hamkyeongdo military and counterattacked. Sin Gak carried out a stake out operation and fought back the Japanese.

The Battle of Haeyuryeong wasn't a great one as it only fought 100~200 enemies but it was the first victory against the Japanese. Sin Gak's army staked out near Haeyuryeong and surprise attacked Giyomasa's advance party. In history, it is stated that Sin Gak killed about 70 of the enemies.

The death of Sin Gak is a sad one indeed. He retreated back to Yangju and lost connection with Kim Myeong-won's main force. Myeong-won thought he'd run away and Seon Jo ordered for his death. The reason why Sin Gak was out of reach was because he was in the middle of the Haeyuryeong battle. Seon Jo took back his order when he found out, but it was too late.
