In the last episode of "ATHENA", (written by Kim Hyeon-joon and Yoo Nam-kyeong, produced by Kim Yeong-joon, Kim Tae-hoon-II and Hwang Jeong-hyeon) Han Jae-hee (Lee Ji-ah) and Son Hyeok (Cha Seung-won) die, and Lee Jeong-woo (Jung Woo-sung) and Yoon Hye-in (Soo Ae) have a happy ending.

Having tried to stop Son Hyeok's terrorist act, Han Jae-hee gets shot twice by him and gets shot again by his man Andy and dies.

Son Hyeok and Lee Jeong-woo stand with guns pointing at each other. A fierce and final battle is seen. Suddenly Yoon Hye-in intervenes and shoots Son Hyeok then she tries to kill herself. She brings the gun to her head but with his very last break Son Hyeok stops her from doing this.

A year later Lee Jeong-woo goes to New Zealand where Yoon Hye-in had her happy childhood. She was there. The ending opened with their reunion. Han Jae-hee and Son Hyeok dies but Lee Jeong-woo and Yoon Hye-in are alive and happy.

As Son Hyeok dies, Kim Ki-soo (Kim Min-jong) leaves somewhere. His destination wasn't revealed. Even Kim Seon-hwa who swore revenge on the Republic was nowhere to be seen.

Through the bulletin viewers complain, "Where is Kim So-yeon? I waited until the last episode to see her but was she just bait?", "Why did she appear in Athena at all? She had no fit role in the entire drama".

Meanwhile, Kim Seon-hwa's revenge will continue in "IRIS 2" a spin off following "ATHENA" which will be aired after fall.
