Stars from the 1990s back in the game

2006/05/29 | 268 views | Permalink | Source

After more than three years of hiatus, actress Ko So-young is unveiling her ever-attractive self this summer in the horror movie "Apartment" directed by Ahn Byeong-ki.

The actress, who was one of the most popular stars in the 1990s, last appeared in the 2002 film "Double Agent" and has since stayed out of the media spotlight except for brief appearances in a few advertising campaigns.

In the movie adaptation of a cartoon by Kang Full, Ko plays a lonely woman who realizes that the lights of an apartment across the street turn off at a certain time and people are mysteriously murdered. "Apartment" has recorded preliminary sales of $3 million at the 58th Cannes Film Festival which ended Sunday.

Expectations are running high for her latest film scheduled to be released on July 6 as Ko was recently named by local movie fans as the most-awaited celebrity to make a comeback. To the greater excitement of movie fans, Ko is set to compete with another top actress from the 1990s, Go Hyun-jung, who is debuting on the big screen this September with director Hong Sang-soo's "A Woman on the Beach". Goh made her successful comeback with last year's television drama Spring Days after a decade of absence from show business following her marriage to the son of the owner of the country's largest department store.

Over the period, the beauty contest winner-turned-actress has still made headlines, having children and getting divorced.

In her upcoming movie, Ko will play a singer/songwriter who meets a guy (played by Kim Seung-woo) at a beach and spends a night together. At a news conference held in April, she admitted that she was very nervous but believed in director Hong, of whom she is a huge fan.

Singers from the 1990s are also making waves, with 015B in the forefront. The brothers, Jeong Seok-won and Jang Ho-il (real name Jeong Ki-won), with a string of guest singers including Yoon Jong-shin and Lee Jang-woo, dominated the 90s music scene with their novel approach. The duo held a concert named "Final Fantasy" in May after being offstage for 10 years. Jang has been in the entertainment business and Jeong has stayed in the United States. In time for the concert, 015B released an album also titled "Final Fantasy", in which younger musicians paid homage to the much-admired band. In July, their seventh album "Lucky Seven" featuring guest artists, including Grammy-winning trumpeter Chris Botti, is due to hit the charts.
