State Anti-Trust Body Calls for Abolition of Screen Quota

SEOUL, Oct. 17 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's anti-trust watchdog reiterated Sunday that the screen quota law is outdated and conflicts with free market principles.

In a report to Rep. Moon Hak-jin of the ruling Uri Party conducting parliamentary audits, the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) said, "The domestic film industry has markedly improved, and homegrown movies need to start competing with Hollywood films".
Korean cinemas are required to fill at least 40 percent of their schedules with domestic films, meaning a minimum 146 days a year.
