Success of Revamped Sonata Boosts Hyundai's Sales in May

Hyundai's newly overhauled Sonata sedan, which was launched in March, was Korea's best-selling car last month.

It is the first time in three years and six months that the automaker's bread-and-butter model reclaimed the top spot. During that period, the Grandeur and Santa Fe had led the sales for the company.

Hyundai said Monday it sold 13,376 Sonatas in May, far ahead of the Grandeur and Santa Fe, which sold 8,327 and 6,882 cars, respectively.

"The new Sonata has had its first complete facelift in five years. Virtually everything was changed except for the name. It boasts various new cutting-edge technologies such as a digital key and internal dash cam, but it comes with a reasonable price tag, and it worked", said a Hyundai spokesman.

The model's strong performance helped Hyundai's domestic sales grow 9.5 percent on-year in May to 67,756 cars.
