Suicide Actress Buried on Illegal Land

The graves of actress Choi Jin-sil and her brother Jin-young, who committed suicide in 2008 and 2010, will have to be moved after the cemetery in Gyeonggi Province where they lie was found to have dug graves on land prohibited for such use.

Police in Yangpyeong said Tuesday that they arrested four people, including the caretaker of the cemetery, its ex-owner, a former site manger and a salesman who sold the plots, and booked two more staffers. According to police, the men sold 188 plots between April 2007 and October last year on 7,550 sq. m of land prohibited for such use and made profits of altogether W4.2 billion from 168 people.

Police were alerted by Yangpeyong county officials in February this year.

The cemetery opened in 1969 and is full, containing 1,200 graves and 2,000 shrines. Police said cemetery staff took W15-30 million per plot, taking advantage of the fact that the two celebrities are buried there.
