Sungshin holds concert in Hawaii

A group of Sungshin Women's University students and professors held a concert in Honolulu, Hawaii, Sunday to celebrate the opening of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting. The concert was also to provide a cultural experience to Korean-American immigrants in Hawaii.

The 180-member group held a traditional Korean clothing fashion show, traditional Korean dance performance and the Sungshin Philharmonic Orchestra performed at Honolulu's Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall.

At the fashion show, the school presented 80 types of traditional Korean dress from the Joseon Dynasty.

The orchestral concert was led by three Sungshin Women's University music department professors and Hawaii University's dean of the music department Laurence Paxton.

An audience of about 2,000 filled the concert hall.

Participants included Mayor of Hawaii Peter Carlisle and the South Korean Consul General to Hawaii Suh Young-kil. Top Korean actor Jung Joon-ho emceed.

"Through this event we were able to promote the excellence of Korean culture and deliver a sense of pride about the Korean people to the Korean immigrants living on the island", said Shim Hwa-jin, president of Sungshin Women's University.
