Golden Disk Awards Congratulates SM Bands; but Fails to Bring Fairness

Super Junior and Girls' Generation from SM Entertainment took home the Grand Prize and the Grand Prize for Digital Music Source, respectively, at the 2009 Golden Disk Awards held at the Olympic Hall, Thursday.
The award for Best Hip Hop went to Epik High, while the Best Rock Award was given to Jang Ki-ha and the Faces. 4Minute and T-ara won Best Rookie Awards, while the Most Popular Singer Awards were given to Super Junior and SHINee.
As one of the biggest music award ceremonies in Korea, the Golden Disk Awards started in 1986, and has honored numerous talented singers for the past years.
Super Junior was awarded for their outstanding performance throughout the year with its hit number "Sorry, Sorry", while Girls' Generation took home the award for its track "Gee".
Considering the popularity in music sources streamed from the Internet, the committee decided to offer two Grand Prizes: one based on off-line popularity through music programs and album sales, and another based on online music source popularity through downloading and ring tones.
The purpose of the division was understandable, but the overall outcome of the event had fans and viewers shaking their heads in confusion.
While groups from SM Entertainment, including Girls' Generation took home two awards and Super Junior, three, other groups from YG Entertainment and DSP Media failed to win anything, let alone appear at the event.
G-Dragon and 2NE1, both under YG Entertainment, failed to win any awards, while this year's hit girl group Brown Eyed Girls also didn't win anything. The three groups, plus Kara and SS501 from DSP Media, didn't appear at the event.
Fans had to wonder what was going on between event organizers and the agencies, as the outcome was the exact opposite of the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) last month.
G-Dragon, 2NE1, Kara , SS501 and the Brown Eyed Girls all won awards at the event organized by music company Mnet Media, while singers from SM Entertainment missed the show citing fairness and also failed to win anything in their absence.
