Director Bong Joon-ho's latest feature The Host is scheduled to open on 250 screens in Japan on September 2nd. The film was pre-sold to Happinet Pictures in Japan for US$4.7 million at the Hong Kong film market in March. Happinet bought the film without previewing any footage that had been shot, seeing only the script and some character drawings.

Happinet has continuously bought or invested in Korean films, including KIM Ki-duk's "3-Iron" and "The Bow" and this year's summer horror-movie A.P.T. by director Ahn Byeong-ki.

The Host will be released on the same number of screens as previous Korean blockbuster Silmido in Japan. Windstruck holds the top spot as the Korean film released on the highest number of screens in Japan, with 310 screens. Taegugki is second at 300.

Japanese sports newspaper, Nikkan Sports, which reported the release of The Host, called director Bong the "Akira Kurosawa" of Korea. After its packed market screenings at Cannes this year The Host became one of the most talked about films at the festival. America's Magnolia Pictures bought rights from selling agent Cine-Click Asia for release in North America, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

The Host is slated for release in theaters July 27th in Korea.
