The potential of domestic characters catches the eye of foreign prominent figures

The power of Korean characters brings famous foreign producers to Korea. Co-hosted by the Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA, President & CEO: Lee Jae-woong) and COEX (Representative Director: Bae Byun-kwon), 'Seoul Character & Licensing Fair 2009' is scheduled to be participated by foreign prominent buyers. The fair takes place from July 22 to 26 at COEX, Samsung-dong, Seoul.
In its 8th edition, 168 businesses at home and abroad, the largest in the history of the fair are scheduled to participate in the fair. Especially, about 60 companies around the world, including large production companies such as BBC Worldwide, Paramount Pictures, and Chorion will join the fair.
Formed in 1912, Paramount Pictures is the oldest American film studio and distribution company. It owns Universal, Marvel, Dreamworks SKG, CBS, Viacom, and MTV. It has produced representative works such as 'Forest Gump', 'Mission: Impossible', 'Titanic', and 'Indiana Jones'. It also released 'Monsters vs Aliens', 'Star Trek', and 'Transformers' this year. This time, this fair is participated by Mr. Ryan Gagerman (Vice President, International Licensing Paramount Consumer Products and Recreation). He will have a business meeting with Korean enterprises.
'BBC Worldwide', a subsidiary of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), is in charge of development, sales, and investment of characters and program brands such as 'Teletubbies', 'Top Gear, 'Planet Earth', 'Charlie & Lola', and 'In the Night Garden'. Ms. Maggie Wong, Senior Publishing and Licensing Manager, Asia, has announced to take part in the fair.
Famous for 'Peter Rabbit', Chorion, UK's leading provider of family entertainment adds its name to the list of participants. Appeared first in 1902, Peter Rabbit is a licensing product with annual revenue worth $5 million. The Peter Rabbit series has sold over 1.5 million copies of books in 35 languages around the globe.
In addition, it is expected that the Korean character industry advances further through this licensing fair given that foreign prominent companies will join the fair to read the trend of the Korean character market and buy products.
"A host of famous foreign enterprises in dealing with contents will participate in the fair. This proves the power that the Korean character industry has in the international arena", said Lee Jae-woong, president of KOCCA. "We will strive to promote character business at home and abroad and nurture the Korean character industry as a new growth engine by encouraging license related companies to participate in the fair".
Meanwhile the fair is expected to meet needs of both visitors and businesses by providing them with entertainments and networking and business opportunities, respectively. This time it is held together with Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival (SICAF) and SPP (Seoul Promotional Plan) whose one to one business program provides supports for conclusion of contracts for free.
