The secret of Pororo's long-running popularity

"The secret of Pororo's long-running popularity may well be its empathy with today's children".

According to Choi, Jong-Il, CEO of iConix, the maker of Pororo?the Korea Comics, Animation, and Character Awards winner for two consecutive years as selected by Korea Culture and Content Agency (KOCCA, CEO: Ko, Seok-Man)?the secret of Pororo's resounding success is its empathy with today's children.

Pororo and its friends Baekom, Yeowoo, and Gongnyeong in the animation Pororo show the children of today as they really are. Thus, what these characters do is what the children of today want to do. The characters' adventures consist of journeys to the very places that the children of today dream of journeying to. It is thus understandable why children love this animation so much. Why won't they? After all, they can identify with Pororo, and this is the secret of the longevity of this extremely popular animation.

Pororo, a successful case of OSMU, has been transformed into over 400 character goods by 100 developers. Its export performance is staggering, advancing into 82 countries and selling animation and toys. Recently, it began negotiating for the export of the animation to South Africa, the part of the world that Korean contents have yet to penetrate. Although nothing about this matter has been made official, reports say that the talks are very promising.
