The UK is to be benchmarked to foster the Korean creative industries

The 1st issue of 'KOCCA Focus' on ' The Analysis of the UK Creative Industries' has been released
As a biweekly report, it covers current issues and topics and provides the whole contents
As the creative industries emerge as the core of the next generation driving force, a report has been released to benchmark the case of UK which has already nurtured its creative industries.
The Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA, President & CEO: Lee Jae-woong) reviewed recent cases of the UK's creative industries and has launched a report, 'Case Analysis of the UK's Creative Industry and Ways of Benchmarking'.
As the first issue of 'KOCCA Focus', this report captured the process that the backbone industry has been changed from manufacturing to services and from knowledge economy to creative economy. The report described the course that the source of value is changed from knowledge and information to creativity and imagination as 'innovation' has been replaced with 'creativity' as a growth engine.
Department for Culture, Media and Sport(DCMS) of the UK government defines the creative industries as:
"those industries which have their origin in individual creativity, skill and talent and which have a potential for wealth and job creation through the generation and exploitation of intellectual property". (DCMS 2001, p. 04)
The government's 10-year efforts to foster the creative industries have paid off in the form of economic performance such as additional value worth 11.9 billion won (6.4% of GDP), 3.3 trillion won in export (4.3 %of the total exports), 2 million job creation(7% of the total), and 160,000 companies (7.3% of the total companies).
As such, the report introduced what is urgently required for Korea to benchmark the case of UK. Those include △ establishment of national agenda at a governmental level and presentation of ways for value creation in relations to the agenda △ introduction of content business model with global network. If these are implemented the Korean Wave can be revived and Korea is expected to be a hub for Asia's creative industries.
